Sticker shock

A car parked on Main Street in Kingston this morning had a bumper sticker that read "Had enough? Vote Phillips."

The message, for those who don't know the local political players, was that incumbent U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, should be replaced in Congress by Broome County Republican George Phillips.

But all I took from the sticker was that people should vote for Phillips simply because he isn't the incumbent.

Look, I know there's an anti-incumbent sentiment in this country, and that many current members of the House and Senate are likely to be voted out of office in the November election, but please, please, PLEASE tell me the challengers who are likely to win these races bring more to the table than just being non-incumbents. Please tell me the have concrete ideas for change and that they have platforms that tell us why we should replace the old bosses with new bosses.

Because if they don't, and we elect them anyway, we're just being fooled again.

I have a number of George Phillips stickers and I hand them out. I am a volunteer for George, I have done door-to-doors with him and I make phone bank calls every week for him. George is not just not the incumbent; he is the ANTI-Hinchey. If you don't like Hinchey because he is a faithful handmaiden to all of Obama's most Marxist urges and policies; if you want lower taxes, lower spending, reduced size of government, more jobs, more small business, more liberty -- YOU WANT PHILLIPS! Don't believe me -- check out www.electgeorgephillips.com and come to a Meet and Greet in our CD-22 district! Help us defeat Maurice Hinchey, a symbol of all that is wrong in D.C.!

You know, a bumper sticker doesn't provide a whole lot of room to make detailed arguments for why a candidate is better. (Remember the Obama "HOPE" poster?) Here's an idea for you: Why not go over to electgeorgephillips.com and find out what Phillips stands for before you ASS|U|ME that his campaign is based on not being the incumbent.

Not assuming anything, Monster. Just calling 'em as I see 'em.
And to Peg C., thanks for the talking-points laundry list regarding lower taxes, smaller government, etc., but please explain how Mr. Phillips will accomplish these things. And P.S., calling him the "anti-Hinchey" is not different than saying he's the "non-incumbent."
I'm not taking sides here; truly I'm not. I just want to hear more than slogans, sound bites and platitudes - from BOTH sides.

Dear Jeremy, Was that ELECT PHILLIPS FOR CONGRESS sticker attached to a big black GOVERNMENT MOTORS truck with a FIRE CONGRESS poster in the rear window, and a REAL HEALTHCARE RESPECTS LIFE poster in the side window? If so, it is mine. Mr Hinchey may be great at bringing home the pork to New York, but I doubt my children and grandchildren will appreciate his part in increasing the deficit beyond sustainability. The unconstitutional government take over of our health care, the job killing enviro-nut "global warming" fiasco. Or his support for an anti-American marxist president. erick amthor

Let's see, 'Truthiness'man 2010, that 'anti-American' and 'Marxist' president has done the following 'socialist' and 'Communist' things since taking office:
1) has continued the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
2) has continued Bush's wiretapping/detention policies
3) announced plans to expand offshore drilling
4) filled his economic team with Wall Street insiders
5) plans to deploy National Guard troops to the Mexican border

Yep, that's some anti-American Marxist in the White House! What in God's name have we done?????

You can do your own research as everyone should do concerning who they are voting for as suggested by Peg c. But based on recent polls looks like most people are not happy with how the goverment has been run and incumbents could find themselves out of job shortly. Me personally have never liked Maurice, and have always voted against him.

Just curious...
How come the people who call Obama's health care reform "unconstitutional" never say the same thing about Medicare?

Obamacare requires Americans to purchase something. I believe medicare is also an over-reach of government. I was not around to protest it when it was passed. Adding more control, and confiscating more of our property under the excuse of " promoting the general welfare" is wrong. In case you have'nt heard medicare is full of corruption and broke.
