And snow it goes ... again

Here's a look at how the snowstorm that's covering all of New York today is affecting schools and events in four regions of the state.

Rochester area: One school district on a two-hour delay, everything else open.
Syracuse area: Three school districts closed, one on a two-hour delay, everything else open.
Utica area: One senior citizens' meeting canceled; no schools closed.
Mid-Hudson Valley: Everything closed, everything canceled, widespread panic.

Gee, what a shock.

In Rochester, Syracuse & Utica right now? "Cloudy". Mid-Hudson Valley? Not so much.

Bill,
All the areas I mentioned were under "winter storm warnings" with 8-14 inches of snow forecast.
Schools around here close when 1-3 inches are forecast.

Good Afternoon Mr.Schiffres,

I just have to say that I do respect that you have enjoyed winters in the Rochester,Buffalo and Niagara Falls areas of New York State, and to mention Saratoga Springs.

Just so you know I lived in Ulster County for over 50 years. From 1954 to 2009. And I did have my share of snow during those years.

I do know from my visits to
Watertown and Fort Drum, Buffalo, Rochester. And being snow bound on Route 17,I-87, I-90,I-88 more times than I can remember and stuck in a local hotel at those locations because travel was to hazardous to travel.

But then again, I am sure you can recall the snow removal equipment the locations in way up NYS have. Compare that to the snow remvoal equipment that is in Ulster County.

Think about it, a DOT truck with a snow blower and three augers attached and a side plow pushing snow ten feet off the road.

I guess I have to put in perspective depending on where we live.

Point being I am visiting in Baltimore County MD today and schools are closed just because there is SOME FREEZING RAIN. As I type this it is 33 degress in Baltimore. And roads are clear.

Just want to keep this in perspective.

Thanks
Lou

Thanks for your comment, Lou.
You're right about the equipment being better in other parts of New York state. Perhaps it's time to get some of that equipment in these parts.

one more interesting note regarding school closings. Heard during school closing announcements a couple of weeks back, classes are cancelled, but pay checks may be picked up after 9am. So come get your money, but educate the kids, not so much. Cannot remember which school ditrict it was, but though it was amusing.
